NURS 243 Mental Health Nursing Assignment: Assist With Design of a Psychiatric Hospital
Goal: Assist with design of a new psychiatric hospital to meet the inpatient and outpatient needs of the
city of Las Vegas.
Objectives:
1. Identify the need for expanded psychiatric services in Las Vegas
2. Discuss the types of in-patient and outpatient psychiatric services that psychiatric hospitals provide
3. Explain why the community may experience anxiety when a new psychiatric facility is built
4. Identify the role of the treatment team (psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses)
5. Describe the role of the psychiatric nurse in in-patient and outpatient settings
Scenario: It is 2035 and you are Nurse Manager of a psychiatric in-patient unit. For10 years, you have
provided care to in-patient and outpatient psychiatric patients in Las Vegas. You are appointed by the
governor to serve on a committee that will propose and oversee the building of a new psychiatric hospital
in Las Vegas. As a committee member, you have been assigned to write a proposal including:
Need for new psychiatric hospital in Las Vegas
Safety features designed into the psychiatric hospital
Populations to be served at the psychiatric hospital
In-patient psychiatric services
Outpatient psychiatric services
Psychiatric Emergency/Crisis services
Psychiatric treatments for mental illness
Multidisciplinary treatment team
Psychiatric nursing staff
Develop and maintain good relationships with Emergency Rooms in Las Vegas
Assignment:
Write your proposal in a 4-8 page(s) paper. Do not include title page and references page in your page
count. Write using APA 7th Edition format. Include:
 title page
 No abstract required.
 Running heads on the title page are no longer required for student papers.

2
In the paper, detail your proposal. Write at least one paragraph for each of the numbered criteria
shown below each heading. Short paragraphs are acceptable, i.e., only 2-3 sentences can be a
paragraph.
Support your proposal with at least two references on the last/References page of your paper. References
need to come from your NURS 243 textbook by Boyd & Luebbert (7th ed.) and the psychiatric nursing
research (evidence-based practice) literature or relevant websites. No blogs; that is considered
unprofessional as they are individual nurse’s opinions and not supported by evidence-based practice
nursing research. No nursing literature reference should be older than five years (so published 2018-
2022).
Suggestion: Your virtual clinical materials have included good articles on psychotropic medications and
your weekly lecture modules have included optional readings/evidence-based practice articles. One or
more of those articles would be acceptable references for this paper; you would need to mention and cite
the article in the text of your paper besides listing it (or them) on your References page. Any resource you
use to obtain evidence/information and use in the assignment must be cited in the paper and on the
reference page; and all references listed on your References page must be included in your paper.
