Your final essay must make a claim that can be disputed (as opposed to stating a fact that no one would disagree with). Your claim, then, should be rooted in making an argument. Your essay will include both analysis and argumentation, and in some cases brief summary of key ideas from your sources. The argument is your OWN argument, to include your own reasons or subclaims based on your research. You will support your reasons/ subclaims with evidence you have found through rigorous research in the course.
Your opening should be compelling and should introduce your research problem in a way that draws attention to your research question. Since all of you are working on pretty recent and controversial issues, you have many options for drawing your reader into your discussion through the use of specific examples, media examples, or personal anecdotes to set up a stable context for your claim.
Your essay should include a thorough descriiption of the problem your essay is addressing, as well as a summary of the most important historical context to help us understand the recent background surrounding the emergence of this problem. Your background/historical context section should be about two paragraphs in length, although this could vary based on your claim.
Your argument will be focused on developing (usually) 3 – 4 reasons (or subclaims) that support and develop your argument. You will integrate at least 4 scholarly articles as support for your reasons, as well as 4 other substantive sources (for a minimum of 8 sources). Remember, this is a minimum, many of you will rely on 10 or more sources in your website. Choosing important passages to quote and paraphrase from your research is an important part of this assignment. Smooth integration of source material is important to substantiating your argument and proving your subclaims.
You will also have to address at least one counter-argument to one of your subclaims. Which you choose to address is based on your own research. If you consistently came across a particular counter-argument or opposing view in your research, this is probably the counter-argument you will need to address. You may have to concede that parts of the counter-argument are correct or understandable. But your goal will be to provide a sound rebuttal of the counter-argument as well.
In the closing, you should restate your main argument, and then you may include suggestions for implementing specific and realistic solutions and/or ideas for continuing efforts to implement change if your argument calls for it. Or you may opt to speculate about the future implications of your research problem if changes are not made. Argumentation should be woven throughout your essay, not just tacked on to the end.
Your final essay should be double spaced, using APA or MLA format, Times New Roman font. It should meet the 3500 minimum word count. (Generally 250 words per page if double spaced, 12 point font)
Reference page, title page, graphs, or other illustrations are not included in the 3500 words count minimum. Papers that fall significantly short of the minimum word count will be automatically penalized at least one letter grade.
